Getting AIM and attaching to the Chat Room

You can get Version 9.5.3 AIM Chat program for PC from our website at or the latest version for MAC or PC at AOL’s Download Site.

How to get into the chat room

Once you have selected and registered your “Buddy Name” send it to me at I will watch out for you at discussion time and issue an invitation to join the discussion.

You may access the room for the first time after you have AIM loaded and running, click on AIM Chat Room

If you are running on Windows 95/98, once you have the AIM program loaded and are in the room, you may create a shortcut to the room yourself. To create this shortcut, Click on ‘File’ and ‘Save As’. Save in any convenient location, (Desktop preferably)

You may then use this shortcut at any point without the necessity of having an invitation. You may then invite anyone on your ‘buddy list’ to join you there.

Alternatively, when you execute the AIM program you can invite any person, real or fictitious, to a chat. This will generate a chat room with a name based on your AIM registered name, e.g. ‘dwrighsr Chat75’. Prior to opening the room, change this name to ‘Heinlein Readers Group’. (Make sure you spell it correctly) and then click on ‘send’ to open the room. If you used a fictitious name, then a message will appear saying that the fictitious person is not available. A real person may accept or decline. To make it simpler and to avoid the possibility that your fictitious name actually might be a real one that you don’t know about, you can add your own registered name to your buddy list and issue an invite to chat to yourself. In all cases, don’t forget to change the name of the room as mentioned above.

You will either be the first person to open the room or you will join it in progress.

Anyone, at any time, can invite others to join the chat room. Note: you will be able to see any online AOL users in your buddy list and the program has been upgraded so that now they may be invited to the discussion. Previously, they had to have the AIM program.

I maintain a mailing list for the discussion group. If you wish, please e-mail me and let me know if you wish to have your name added so that you may receive notices about the discussions.

If anyone uses the room at any time to talk about Heinlein and wants to preserve the log for posterity, please use the ‘File’ and ‘Save As’ to save the file. When finished. e-mail me a copy at and I will post it on this information page.

Access to the chat room is available on other platforms such as Unix and Linux, as well as through programs other than AOL’s, but I have no information on any of these at this time.
