President JT here with a report on the weekend’s activities at Balticon 56, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. This year we started off with the induction of David Gerrold as the 2022 recipient of the Robert A. Heinlein Award given by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society with support from THS. Dr. Beatrice Kondo, THS Treasurer and award Selection Board member, performed the induction honors.
You can see the video of his acceptance speech on David’s Facebook page.
Members of THS had a chance to dine privately with David on Saturday.
On Sunday David gave a panel talk on “Heinlein & Me” and had a short conversation with Dr. Kondo again and C.J. Cherryh, the 2021 Heinlein Award winner via the virtual convention track. Ms. Cherryh answered questions from the audience and was delightful to hear.
Sunday morning I ran a book discussion on The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. We even had two people who hadn’t read the book who we got pretty interested! We had about 25 in attendance for that and we got three new members after that discussion. Thank you!
Our members love to hang out at our fan table and just engage with the convention-goers. We give out ribbons, answer questions, and best of all collect donations for our Heinlein For Heroes program. This year we collected 44 books with several Heinlein titles in there–enough for 2-3 packages for Operation Paperback.
Balticon is a real writers and artists appreciation time–if that sounds like fun we’ll see you there next year!
