Post Online texts
A number of RAH's works can be found online (and some have already been linked on the Forum). I suggest here a thread where those links can be collected, and further suggest that discussions should be broken out into new threads.

Starting with . . .

Blowups Happen G.017

Goldfish Bowl G.032

Solution Unsatisfactory G.026

Universe G.025

A few weeks ago I posted a pointer to my roundup of Heinlein's stories in Boys' Life, at http://beamjockey.livejournal.com/150833.html.

Here are links to the stories themselves:

Part 1, Part 2

Satellite Scout, better known as Farmer in the Sky (August through November 1950)

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

Tramp Space Ship, better known as The Rolling Stones (September 1952 through December 1952)

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

"Tenderfoot in Space" (May through July 1958)

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Thanks for all these links, and especially for TGHOE, which I haven't yet seen in print.

What I don't get is why RAH referred to Damon Knight as damon knight all through the essay. (Once he referred to him as damon Knight.)

I don't really know, but I think that "damon knight" may have been Knight's handle in fanzines, where he initially published most of his criticism. In his introduction to Knight's In Search of Wonder, Anthony Boucher refers to him in lowercase, and adds a footnote: "Every time I type that name I have to reassure myself that I have not been reincarnated as a cockroach." Both The Science Fiction Novel and In Search of Wonder were published by Advent Books, which was started by a group of Chicago SF fans. Maybe "damon knight" was part of Advent's stylebook.

Having now examined my own copy, I can say that "Damon Knight" is capitalized on page 15 of the 1969 paperback reprint of The Science Fiction Novel. So Advent changed this after the 1959 edition, which, I presume, is the one in the Hathi Trust's archive. Maybe somebody realized that the lowercase name would just annoy readers of the Twenty-First Century. The newer edition has fresh typesetting with more words per page.

I tend to think that Heinlein himself would not have typed the cute lowercase version of the name.

By the way, this essay holds the seeds of some of the research I've been doing: RAH mentions his physicist pal Robert Cornog on page 32 of the online version, and traces the evolution of space suits on page 39. This lecture was delivered in Chicago about six months before Heinlein started typing Have Space Suit, Will Travel.
