Post Heinlein at LosCon
So I was fortunate enough to be at LosCon for most of yesterday; met Bill and got my autographed copy of the biography; chatted with Mike Sheffield and Keith Kato at his famous chili party. I even managed to stay for a panel Bill was on: "Don't Start with This Book." He can fill in the details better than I. I took the cheap shot of suggesting that FUTL was not a good Heinlein to start with :-)

Attendees, please fill in other Heinlein-related material from LosCon here. How did the AGM go?

I think we learned not to try to fit into a one-hour programming slot in future. We were going to have a waived reading of minutes, but one attendee objected and most of the time was taken up with that.

We did move smartly through the election of board members and did also fit in some "good of the Society" discussion -- but we would have used more time.

Forgot to mention the sheet cake for the Society's 10th birthday-of-incorporation. The vanilla buttercream with raspberry ribbon iced cake was moved back to the fan table in the hall when we ran out of time in the room, and slices passed around, which meant many more got to participate in the cake.

Counting the green roomwith its ever-replenishing supplies of fudge and cookies, this was the most sugar-rush LosCon I've ever attended.

We had a good panel on how Heinlein's stories interact with socio-cultural events of his day.

We also attended an interesting panel with Greg Benford and John (whose last name escapes me for the moment, but he always wears a propellor beanie at conventions) about "Mission of Gravity."

Were they provided in printed form as is usually the case? If so, who objected and why?

There were only a very few copies of the minutes, not enough to go around. The objector (you can ask Mike) had some new business she was eager to take up (Good of the Society stuff), so it was frustrating to her to be stuck in the long process.

I think my correction was the only one made to last year's minutes -- having Jerry Pournelle referred to as "Dr.," rather than "Mr.," as there were references to other Dr.'s in the surrounding text. I almost asked to omit what seemed a gratuitous slam against Mr. Wright, but he had said here he didn't want to object to it, so I didn't raise that as a correction to last year's minutes.

Alas the gratuitous slam against Mr. Wright actually occurred from the Chair in the meeting the minutes were memorializing, for the purpose of defeating him for re-election to the board in Montreal. Hard to avoid reporting it in those circumstances.

Of course the current Board holds DW in high regard, and high confidence, as his current positions will show.
