I have been a Heinlein fan since 1947 when I read The Green Hills of Earth in the Saturday Evening Post.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
My first book was 'The Door into Summer' It blew me away. My mother read it first, and handed it around to her two kids. She and my sister became my first two water brothers when we discovered SiSL. There were more water brothers to come and I *DO* take water brotherhood as a serious responsability. Later in life I became Pagan and, was amazed to find that there was a pagan group called The Church of all Worlds. I did not join. Heinlein met the initial leaders of this group and was polite, but nothing more meaningful ever evolved from the meeting. Heinlein always said his motives for writing were to just tell a good story. I doubt very much he ever had any intention of folowing the teachings of Valentine Michael Smith. ;)

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Hi all
Stumbled across the forum yesterday. Thanks.
I'm a forty year old Australian. Living currently in perth but grew up in the country and spent much of my adult life in Sydney.

Always been an avid reader, as a kid I was a horror kid, and until I was 12 I was obsessed with Steven king, but then I discovered Poe and Lovecraft.

I was 15 when looking through my fathers bookshelf for something new and noticed a lot of Heinlein books, I'd never heard of him and apart from Frankenstein had not read any science fiction (I was really into horror) but one back blurb grabbed me so I had a go.
I read in a sitting and was well and truly hooked. The book was MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS.
Over the coming weeks I read all the Heinlein he had. Which was sadly incomplete and a bit over the shot.

I asked my father why he had them as I had never seen him read SF. And he explained that at the time all the hippies were into RAH. Though strangely he didn't have a copy of stranger in a strange land, perhaps it was borrowed and not returned.

Now 25 years later I've read an reread everything as I'm sure everyone here has.

Yesterday I started puppet masters and was thinking about how for some reason it doesn't feel like a RAH Jen I read it. I. Any put my finger on it.

I'm not a rich man and my Heinlein collection is mainly old paperbacks from thrift stores which is fine by me, as I READ them :). I do by doubles and triples and...,,, whatever. However I did find a first edition STRANGER in a shop for $8 (hardcover sans dust jacket ) and a few other firsts from juvenile titles, all worn and well read but I love them.

Favourite book is still MOON.
Favourite story is ALL YOU ZOMBIES.

Anyway. I usually use forums for my other passion of vintage movie posters but I used to write on a forum called templeton gates years ago and it would be nice to talk RAH etc again

Thanks

Ari

Welcome, Ari. I think you will find this forum worth your while. There are many here who know a lot more than me about Heinlein so I find it a constant learning experience, in the best sense of that phrase.

Welcome Ari. I collected the books the same way as you... thrift store paperbacks, whatever it took, because the only thing that counts is, as you say, reading...

Welcome, Ari! "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is also my favorite Heinlein novel. I started reading Heinlein seriously a bit late, after a too-early encounter with "Stranger in a Strange Land": I was fourteen years old and it shocked me deeply. (Hey, I grew up in the Bible belt, although my parents were agnostic and I'd never gone to church.) Fortunately a few years later I read some of his better juveniles, then TMIAHM and was hooked. I finally reread SIASL when I was about thirty, and loved it. ;)
