 Ernest Shackleton
This page just came to my attention: I think I should read up more on this guy. Sounds like he had his priorities straight.

 Re: Ernest Shackleton
I wonder if RAH had this episode in mind when he wrote the early chapter of Farmer in the Sky wherein the accordion is deemed a "community asset" and thus exempt from weight allowances.

 Re: Ernest Shackleton
Maybe. Or maybe it's just that Shackleton and Heinlein thought alike where this was concerned. (And I agree with them.)

 Re: Ernest Shackleton
This all seems so much more reasonable than my housemates were the time they misplaced my harmonica.

I was charged double to bring my bagpipes.

 Re: Ernest Shackleton
You'll be charged a lot more if you bring them to Parliament. (Unless the law has changed, and I've no reason to think it has, bagpipes are forbidden on the floor of Parliament because they are articles of war. Or so they say.)

 Re: Ernest Shackleton
We hired a bagpiper for our wedding. He started up in the church balcony after the "I present to you Mr. & Mrs.". We and the bridal party were the only ones who could see him there throttling up. The looks on peoples' faces were priceless.

 Re: Ernest Shackleton
We had a bagpiper for my first wedding, which was on the beach at Point Reyes. Storybook-beautiful wedding but it turned out that I'd married the evil witch.
