Post Creative landing
Saw in the mainstreeem media a story about a Delta widebody landing on the taxiway instead of the more conventional runway at Atlanta Hartsfield. They quoted the FAA as saying that it had never happened before, which I figured was unlikely, so I went over to PPRUNE to see what they were saying: http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/3930 ... xiway.html . Of course, it has happened before... and more than once at some airports. Interestingly, the pilots there were not coming down on the Delta crew as being idiots, but instead were largely sympathetic. Lots of "me too" stories... including some about planes landing at the wrong airport. Yes, even in the GPS era.

My brother worked for Delta from the mid 50s through the 60s. He told me a tale.

An airplane was flying south at night to Jackson, Mississippi. Well, it turned out that Yazoo City, some 30 miles north of Jackson turned on their new runway lights for the first time. The pilots got confused and landed at Yazoo City. The pilot, realizing his error tried to turn around on the short and narrow runway to take off. The runway was too short for takeoff and fortunately, the plane mired in the mud. The pilot was severely reprimanded, maybe even fired, not for landing at the wrong place, but for the attempted takeoff.

They got the passengers off and sent them to Jackson and sent a crew over to Yazoo to get the plane off after stripping excess weight. The whole town turned out to see it take off.

I suppose this isn't the place for the guy who, a few years back, stumbled sleepily onto the third or fourth plane of his flight, heard the overhead announce the flight to Oakland, nodded, then nodded off.

Only to wake up well on the way to Auckland. Yes, folks, SFO is a big airport. Qantas sent him home without charge, albeit grumpily.

Quick, and no Googling, what does "Qantas" mean?

Irreducibly small packets of energy?
