Post Dumb Star Trek question
This has been bugging me for a week or so and all the mighty search engines, integrative or not, have failed me.

Is the phrase "star trek" ever uttered in a canonical ST episode or movie? Not counting Roddenberry's bogus lyrics to the theme?

The answer, with a quick Perl script (below) and a site of transcripts is: no.

Code:
use strict;
use warnings;

use WWW::Mechanize;

my $mech = WWW::Mechanize->new;
for my $top ( "movies/index.htm", "Voyager/episode_listing.htm",
         map { "$_/episodes.htm" }
              qw(StarTrek NextGen DS9 Enterprise),
       )
{
  my $url = "http://XXX/$top";
  print "Checking $top\n";
  $mech->get( $url );
  for my $link ( $mech->links )
  {
    my $url = $link->url;
    next if $url =~ m!/! || $url !~ /\d/ || $url =~/javascript/ || $url =~ /#/;

    $mech->get( $url );
    my $content = $mech->content( format => 'text' );
    $content =~ s/.*?Original Airdate//i;
    while ( $content =~ /Star\s+Trek(.{1,50})/sg )
    {
      next if $1 =~ /trademarks|is copyright|web pages/;
      print $link->text, ": $1\n";
    }

    $mech->back;
  }
}

The few hits it produces are easily determined to be spurious - I mean, you don't count a voiceover that "The cast and crew of Star Trek wish to dedicate this film to the men and women of the spaceship Challenger" I presume. There are also hits from two-parters in the "Last time on Star Trek" voiceovers.

The movie transcripts contain some "extra" stuff (see ST IV for instance at the beginning). I assume they were earlier versions.

The value to substitute in place of XXX is http://www.chakoteya.net . I took it out so that if anyone's going to abuse this code to conduct numerous searches annoying the site owner, at least they can't claim it was an accident.

P.S. That site doesn't have a transcript for the latest Star Trek movie, unsurprisingly.

In the final TNG episode "All Good Things...," there's the following exchange between Q and Picard that comes pretty close (this is from IMDB, and it matches what I remember):

Capt. Picard: We are what we are. And we're doing the best we can. It is not for you to set the standards by which we shall be judged!
Q: Oh, but it is, and we have. Time may be eternal, Captain, but our patience is not. It's time to put an end to your trek through the stars; make room for other more worthy species.

I'm boggled. I shouldn't be, I suppose, but... well, I'm boggled.

Hey, I goofed - I left out the case-insensitive modifier. Was wondering why it didn't find the All Good Things quote when I reduced it to just "Trek". This line of code should be modified to add the i:

Code:
    while ( $content =~ /\bTrek(.{1,50})/sgi )

And now the answer changes. One hit: movie, First Contact:
Quote:
RIKER: But unless you make that warp flight tomorrow morning before eleven fifteen, none of it will happen.
COCHRANE: And you people, you're all astronauts, ... on some kind of star trek?
LAFORGE: Look, Doc, I know this is a lot for you to take in, but we're running out of time here.

And that is also the only other place besides the one JJ found where the word "trek" was used.

Deep Space Nine: To boldly go... uh, nowhere. They'll boldly come to us. Yeah, that's it...

Isn't that the film that's practically slapstick all the way through? ("I am programmed to serve as a flotation device!"?) So I guess if they were going to throw it in, that's the one.

No, you're thinking of Insurrection.
