It's too bad the New Horizons probe only flew by Pluto.

It would have been helpful for it to orbit the "dwarf planet." Then maybe we would have seen the remains of the Wormfaces' base.

I write about astronomy and spaceflight for the Vatican Observatory Foundation. Forgive me for treating your jest as though it were serious-- I know better-- but since I wrote something relevant a few months ago, I'll link to it.

If you're wondering why New Horizons was a flyby and not an orbiter, I offer a few ideas.

In Praise of Flyby Missions, Part One

In Praise of Flyby Missions, Part Two

While you're there, browse around the Catholic Astronomer site. You might find it interesting.

Thanks for the articles. As the new wave of photos are coming in, it is clear that New Horizons was a remarkable achievement.

As of September 2015, here are some of the NASA photos: http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Science-Photos/image.php?gallery_id=2&image_id=308.

Truly a world's surface unlike any other.

In July, I went out to Maryland to help NASA with educational and public outreach during the week of the flyby. It was an extraordinary experience.

Once I get my accounts of The Pluto Campaign written up, I should probably post a link here.
