Tom Clancy has died at 66. Of relevance here given his speech at Heinlein's memorial and affection for him.

I am surprised he was so young - he must have found success very early. I thought he in his forties when HFRO was published, but I see he was 37.

I honestly didn't care for any of his books past the first couple, and I have a distaste for authors who turn themselves into a franchise ("co-writing" books and so forth), but Red October was definitely a game-changer and Clancy certainly left his mark on popular literature.
