"Project Nightmare" G.098

The entire issue of Amazing Stories is archived here. The inside front cover has a quotation from RAH regarding his work habits. Does anyone know where it came from?

Does anyone have any idea if this story and "There goes Cleveland!" from the old game Missile Command are connected? Or is it just one of those coincidences???

One of Heinlein's very best. Well-developed characters who have a real arc. Ariel's dialogue doesn't have so much of the (for lack of a better word) "preciousness" that some of his later female characters (see Maureen in To Sail Beyond the Sunset, for example) do (although you can see hints of it). Just the right amount of dropping in of brand names (American Express, Duncan Hines hotel, Macy-Gimbel Upper), as well as cultural references (Gripsholm, Fingal's Cave -- and why was the man named Dorcas? Was RAH making an allusion that I've missed? The name made much more sense in SiaSL). Heinlein's mastery of gliding over an explicit SF situation without explanation, assuming you'll catch on ("the door dilated" is the classic one).

And, oh, the flying. Skip the Helium-3, this is why we need to colonize the moon.

The 2007 Worldcon should have given it a Retro-Hugo since there were no short story awards for 1957.

The Menace From Earth is the story that first got me interested in flapping flight. I love that story. And flapping flight. :-)

As an aside, Ginny gave me xerox copies of the manuscripts of several of Robert's Puddin stories. The internal changes he made as he wrote them were interesting.

Some Heinlein here, but lots of other stuff. Just wasted some work time reading Allen Steele.

The Internet Archive now hosts full runs of If and Galaxy, both of which include Heinlein (and other!) stories.
