Post Inventions
I was reading the wiki, and I wonder -- did Heinlein "invent" the cell phone? Twice there are mobile phones in his juveniles -- once in Between Planets and once in Space Cadet.

Is this the earliest mention of such?

You missed the earlier mention in "Waldo."

I don't know if Heinlein was first in this respect - it's such a obvious idea I suspect a search of early sf would turn up several precursors - but if you reread the passages about Bill and Matt each being embarrassed talking to their fathers in front of friends, and Tex jovially having packed his phone away to avoid being bothered... he might have been the first to think the sociological implications through.

You have wiki-whacking privileges, you know. Use them!

In the end, I found Heinlein is finite. Thus, finite analysis is needed.

I already put Melancholy Elephants into the story list of things that were inspired by Heinlein. If the female character wasn't supposed to be Ginny I'll take you out to dinner. I could add quite a bit to several areas -- after all, I started with The Puppet Masters when I was 10 (still have the 35 cent Signet edition!) and have talked to lots of people about his work over the years.

But we will likely get laid off at work on 8/28, and after that I'll have lots of time for doing personal stuff.

I applaud your silver-lining philosophy and commiserate with your misfortune. I hope it will be temporary.

Oh yes. No idea whether callback will be October or January, but we will be called back.
