Post Heinlein moon landing commentary
I have often read of RAH's commentary of the first moon landing. Since I was but a wee lad and my reading taste ran more toward See Spot Run, Instead of Starship Troopers, Heinlein was just another talking head on the tv to me. I would love to see the video if it available. I ran a search on YouTube but didn't find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

On a sad related note, I have just read that Walter Cronkite has died. In my mind he will always be linked to the space program. I actually have dim memories of his commentary at the time.

I sat be the TV with my brand new high-tech mono cassette tape recorder and 'captured' the entire thing. Then someone taped over it. Oh well. At least my folks let me commandere the set for the whole show. I don't think anyone else in the family really cared -- or maybe they thought it was a hoax... I never asked.

Somebody from the Heinlein Society, I presume David Silver, showed a video of this at a con I attended sometime in the past decade. I think it was a Windycon.

From comments online, I believe this recording belongs to CBS and they put severe restrictions on where it can be shown. So no Youtube without piracy-- unless you can convince CBS to release it.

Anybody know more?

For another video of Heinlein discussing a different Moon landing, see this:

RAH speaks for only a couple of minutes, so don't get your hopes up!

Post Re: Heinlein moon landing commentary
I can remember sitting by the television all evening waiting for the astronauts to step onto the surface of the moon. I was only 7 years old, and I can remember my dad talking my mother into allowing me to stay up past my bedtime to witness the historic event. It was close to midnight in southern Oklahoma.I don't think that I stayed up too long after witnessing them come out on to the moon. As I mentioned, I can remember Walter Cronkite's commentary, as he was a familiar face. I just don't have any recollection of RAH.

Thanks for the info, I might try to contact CBS and see if the footage is available.

We have the footage, from Heinlein's own copy of the CBS release tape. We showed it at the Centennial.

It is copyrighted material so it can't be put online without permission (which is highly unlikely).

I don't think that link posted as intended, it seems to loop back around to the NF.

Yes, another fault of the integration: several steps are left out of forum URLs. I don't know why, precisely; something like what happens with frames.

I will see if there is a workaround. I do plan to write a concise, cleaned-up set of instructions for using the integrated world here. :P

Dear me. Well, I was attempting to post to an item I wrote with these specs:

Try going up to the "search" item in the row at the top of this page. Searching for the string "KTLA" ought to get you to a discussion of the Heinlein appearance on the George Pal documentary DVD.
