Post An Apocryphal (possibly) Heinlein Story
Seen at John Scalzi's SciFi Movie Column HERE:

Quote:
There's an apocryphal story that someone complained to Robert Heinlein's widow that the movie version of Starship Troopers was a travesty compared to the novel, to which she replied that because of the movie, the book itself had once again shot up into the bestseller charts. So the movie, regardless of quality, was doing the book a favor.

So . . . can anyone here confirm or deny this story? Or will it have to remain apocryphal?

Bill P will no doubt have data, when he next checks in. (He seems to be between permanent domiciles and thus a little fragmented on time to do things online.)

It's very much in character for VH, though - remember her comments about IWFNE as a "failure" that sold more than a million copies.

It was RAH who fought for accuracy, intelligence and consistency so hard that none of his movie and television projects (save DM) ever came to anything.

In the end, I found Heinlein is finite. Thus, finite analysis is needed.

Ginny never said anything like that to me, but as you note, it's in character for her to have said something like that to someone at some time. Except I doubt she would have used terms like "bestseller." She might have said something like "sales jumped" - but at the same time she would have undoubtedly recalled the time Howie Horwitz was trying to talk RAH into doing the Century XXII project and said that the exposure would bring his books back into print. She and RAH just looked at each other and passed on, because, of course, none of his books had ever at that time been [i]out[i] of print. That would have been 1963
