Post subject:  Jerry really *is* a man??

I wish RAH were around to see this:
Quote:
Tommy, a 26-year-old former circus performer, lives on a caravan park in Gloversville in upstate New York, where he spends his days alone and confined to a shed, watching cartoons and nature programmes on television.

His lawyer, Steven Wise, says this is no kind of life for a human. The problem? Tommy is a chimpanzee.

This week, however, in what is believed to be the first court case of its kind, Mr Wise will argue that Tommy and other chimps are entitled to “legal personhood”. The Boston-based lawyer, who is also the president of animal advocacy group the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP), hopes a New York appeals court will rule that Tommy has been unlawfully imprisoned, and ought to be released to live among other chimps at a sanctuary in Florida.

Vegan and animal rights groups have been trying to change the definition of murder for a long time to include all animals. Guess I'll never see it happen.

The link timed out for me. Would you mind summarizing the article? Thanks in advance!

Quote:
In the summer of 1982 Kat [animal researcher] was newly pregnant, and Washoe [chimpanzee] doted over her belly, asking about her BABY [using American Sign Language]. Unfortunately, Kat suffered a miscarriage. Knowing that Washoe had lost two of her own children, Kat decided to tell her the truth. MY BABY DIED, Kat signed to her. Washoe looked down to the ground. Then she looked into Kat’s eyes and signed CRY, touching her cheek just below the eye. When Kat had to leave that day, Washoe would not let her go. PLEASE PERSON HUG, she signed.

Note: chimpanzees themselves do not have the physiology to cry.

Now comes Hercules and Leo:
Quote:
For the first time ever, two research chimpanzees were recognized as legal persons by a New York court on Monday. The chimps, Hercules and Leo, are currently housed at Stony Brook University on Long Island, where they are used for biomedical research. They have now been granted habeas corpus by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jaffe and will be relocated to a sanctuary in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

Here's another example of chimpanzees having supposedly "human" capabilities: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/chimps-mental-skills-cook-study-230355185.html#VMQuTG7

In response, the New Yorker published this cartoon on its Web site today. I believe the link will take you to the image but not the caption. The image is a room full of chimpanzees at typewriters with two human scientists in lab coats, one reading the sheet of paper taken from one of the chimpanzees' typewriters. He says, "Never mind—it’s just another recipe for boeuf bourguignon."
