Post subject:  Doolittle Raiders call the roll one last time...

My stars, how Heinleinian. I didn't know any services ever responded to a roll call of the dead like this.

My grandfather was a supply officer aboard the U.S.S. Hornet when the Dolittle Raid took off. I never could get him to tell me much about his experiences during WWII, unfortunately. I did learn what the Dolittle Raid was about later, after Grandad died. These guys were the real deal.

I daresay that roll calls [with or without the attendant toasts] of the dead are a prominent feature of the reunions of any army/marine corps/air force or navy ship's company unit that saw combat in WWII/Viet Nam/GWI/II/III. [WWI omitted because, IIRC, the last US WWI survivor has passed on.]
