That's a nice find and a nice read. Thanks.

I note that the site containing this apparently collected such things in preparation for publishing a book of such small writings, which, according to the side panel note, is due out.

I'm sure the author tracked down permission for every one of dozens (hundreds?) of "letters, memos, postcards, telegrams, etc." from all these fascinating people. Oh, wait... it's a collective blog on the internet in 2012. Never mind.

From the the pre-order page:

A large coffee-table volume of 400 pages, with 200 letters, each of them reproduced in facsimile with an introduction by me and a transcript of the text. Unbound’s plan is to produce a physical object of great loveliness: cloth bound, using thick, uncoated paper: something that gives you the experience of holding and reading the actual letters themselves.

and

Where does my money go?
This is going to take me eight months of work obtaining permissions, and agreement from all the parties included in the correspondence.

Looks like the blog owner is going about things the right way.

I'm liking the blog, an eclectic mix of letters and notes. I've been going through and making note of examples to show my students later on in the year.

Applause, then, for both the work and the attention to the quaint notion of ownership. I did poke around the blog a bit and it seems to be anything but the, er, sort of amateur crap collection that most such sites are.

I am a bit bemused by the current trend of writing your book online and then putting it between two slices of cover, though...

I hear from many well-connected sources that this is common practice now for new authors. The publishers won't publish until you have a "platform", and that means demonstrating that people will read your book once they publish it. Whereas that used to be a classic Catch-22, now it can actually be resolved by putting the thing out as POD or blog first.

Thanks for linking to the letter. I had heard of it, but seeing the full text reveals much about Bob Heinlein the man. I know there are numerous examples of Heinlein's generosity to fellow authors down on their luck. Heinlein was a bottomless fount of ideas.

The ghost of a little cat looking for a friendly lap, too bad RAH never wrote it.

My copy of the US publication of Letters of Note arrived today and it is an absolute treat. Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Elvis Presley writing Nixon asking to be a federal agent, & more. I'm enjoying just flipping and reading random letters, love that there is not a pattern to the placement of the letters in the book.

I think I'll pick this up, although it will have to get in line behind volume II of the Patterson Heinlein biography and a number of other books before I'll find time to read it. :-)

I've just finished the part of the Heinlein biography that describes the writing of this letter and it reminded me of this discussion on the forum. Did Sturgeon ever write any stories based on the ideas Heinlein sent him?
