I couldn't resist the description and ended up subscribing to Letters of Note. It *is* a nice book :)

... unfortunately, the UK edition doesn't have RAH's letter to Sturgeon.

Famous (sort of) letter from Heinlein to Sturgeon.

I've just finished the part of the Heinlein biography that describes the writing of this letter and it reminded me of this discussion on the forum. Did Sturgeon ever write any stories based on the ideas Heinlein sent him?

Yes, at least twice. One was "The Other Man," in GALAXY 1956. The other, one of Sturgeon's best, was in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION in Dec 1956 -- "And Now the News". Sturgeon briefly considered doing a collection of his stories based on the Heinlein letter, to be titled RH POSITIVE.... but apparently never wrote more than these two.

Thanks, Michael. I'll have to look those up.

Sturgeon's collection And Now the News has some good story notes on both stories. You can read snippets on Google Books and Amazon's "Look Inside" feature; just enough to make you want to find a dead-tree version to read them all.

You can read "The Other Man" HERE. Note that Sturgeon named a character in it "Anson" in recognition of the source of the story, and that ANTN has a character named "MacLyle" (from Lyle Monroe).

Thanks, Bill. I don't read dead-tree versions, though, unless that is all that is available. I much prefer digital books.
