Post Essay on Double Star
By Connie Willis -- Link

I recently blathered about how characterization isn't Heinlein's strong suit. Lorenzo Smythe is a super counter-example.

Heinlein COULD do excellent characterization, it just (still) wasn't his strong suit. I agree, most of the characters in DS are extremely well-wrought... but then, it's one of his novels primarily about people.

Thanks for the link, Bill. Ms. Willis has done an excellent job of describing why Double Star is the non-juvenile book I recommend as a starting point to anyone who hasn't read Heinlein.
