I'm curious if you've read The Martian Named Smith?

Is that the essay for the library association? If so, yes.

No, it's a book/monograph about Stranger I wrote about ten years ago. It unpacks a lot of *stuff* in stranger and has a long concluding appendix about the meaning of character names. A bit has been published since then on the subject of the names, and on the writing chronology, but TMNS has the biggest chunk of information about Stranger(that I know of, at any rate) Available from Nitrosyncretic Press -- or I believe, from the Heinlein Society now. Haven't heard yet what terms they will sell the stock.

Yeah, I ordered it yesterday from Amazon.

I can vouch for the fact that TMNS is a great read, although 10 years on I'm still trying to understand it.

But do you understand Stranger any better????

It certainly helped me to understand that there are many layers, nuances and contexts within Stranger that I never considered. It also helped solidify my belief that Heinlein was much, much more than an ordinary science fiction author. Thanks for that.

That's what I was aiming for. I would say "my work here is done," but it's obviously not. Back to editing
