I just read about a plan for a 70's movie of Dune that never came to fruition:

Read that page, it has some amazing and rib-tickling concepts. Despite the fact that it would probably have given Frank Herbert or at least his fans apoplexy, it would have been nothing if not interesting.

Jodorowsky ended up taking many of the concepts from his Dune film and reworked them into his comic book series Meta Barons. Interesting, but not Dune.

Sounds a bit like the genesis of Watchmen. (Alan Moore wanted to do something interesting with the stable of characters that DC inherited from Charlton Comics, and ended up using thinly recast analogues instead.)
