Been watching the buzz on this one a long time. It looked for a bit that it was going to be horribly screwed up, then they made a couple of very right choices for director and casting and it looks to be a real screen-burner... in 3D, yet.

It's hard to imagine it being mediocre.

Taylor Kitsch could turn out to be an absolutely inspired choice for John Carter. Totally phlegmatic and yet too cool for school at the same time. Always liked him in Friday Night Lights, but then I saw him in Wolverine, and *really* was digging him.

He'a not the only one from Wolverine... Dejah Thoris is to be played by the female lead, also.

Here is what clinched the need to see for me: Screenplay by Michael Chabon....

Somewhere out there is a screenplay of HSSWT by John Varley!

And lost in the nether: the screenplay of "More than Human" Sturgeon wrote with Orson Welles. I kid you not.

I'll pretty much give any Chabon book or film a free pass. I wish Kavalier and Clay wasn't lost in development hell.

I was unaware that The Yiddish Policemen's Union had won the Hugo. It was a major and pleasant shock. One of the few books in recent decades I've read twice within a week.

Eh. Varley has no track record in film worth mentioning. As damp as the combination might make fanboys, I'd rather see screenplays by a really competent screenwriter (Rossio/Elliot, Orci, Kurtzman) than any of the sf writers who have done a fan-fave but commercially unviable treatment.

I just noticed that Ian McShane has been cast as Blackbeard in POTC4. Ensures I'll be in line opening weekend.

By the way, POTC 4 is based on a book by Tim Powers, of the same name as the subtitle of the film.
