Post I Hate People!
With a title like that, how can you not read it? And it is also on topic for my coaching business.

The central thesis is that people - well, most people, nearly all people - are pests who impede your career and make your life fetid. Numerous colorful examples prove the point. There are the de rigeur classifications of pests, and chapters on the virtues of doing the Thoreau thing.

However, this little manifesto isn't the fluff piece it looks like at first. The later chapters actually contain valuable advice on setting up supportive workplace environments and examples of people who successfully stepped off the corporate hamster wheel that could have been drawn from Fast Company magazine. Worth a read by anyone who's not off in the woods already.

Well I am halfway through and so far it seems to be a lot of stereotyping - while all the behaviors he describes indeed exist in abundance, I think they exist in parts in most people - not everyone is a bulldozer all the time, etc. I believe they do allude to that.

Anyway I hope he has some ideas for a solution.....

Listing a book by title only is a bit scant. Title, author and year is a polite minimum, I think. Adding a link to Amazon or another major online source is politer. Mailing us each a copy is, of course, politest.

What Jim said. ;)

Speaking of which:

* Esther Friesner hasn't suffered in her transition from writer of adult comic novels to writer of more serious juveniles. "Sphinx's Princess", a fantasy retelling of the story of Nefertiti, is readable, good fun, and surprisingly solid. After I finish it, I'll decide which of my younger friends' daughters should get it.

* I'm about 100 pages into Prof. Leonard Susskind's "The Black Hole War". It's fricking brilliant, both in its review of physics over the past 30 years and descriptions of many of the players. I'll post a longer review later, but this one is worth not waiting for the mass market paperback. (It was published as a trade PB, list cost $15.99.)

* Has anyone here read the Arthur C. Clarke/Frederik Pohl collaboration, "The Last Theorem", yet?

One of these days I'll get my other Heinleins unpacked. (TMIAHM never left me.) ;)

No, but we (the Centennial Cinque) have a great story about it.

"World's only copy of a collaborative ms between two sf titans goes missing at a convention. Well-intended attempts to return it to its frantic owner fail. Hijinks and chaos ensue."

Okay, Jim. *OUT WITH IT*, dammit -- I want that story!

I have. I meant to post a review but I forgot. It was, ultimately, rather forgettable. Pages and pages describing the domestic life of the protagonist which I ended up skimming faster and faster to get to the alien plot which was actually moving. A rather awkward connection with the title. Somewhat of a fizzle ending. Some imaginative parts but very derivative of both authors' earlier works.
