There's a very odd little piece in the current New Yorker (May 2 issue) about the various reading lists the various branches of the US military have assembled for various categories of reader.

There is a passing and slightly dismissive note that Starship Troopers is included on the Navy Professional Reading Program. It does not mention Heinlein as the author. (The article is mixed as to whether it attributes the various titles it lists or not):
In terms of “strangeness,” the Navy Professional Reading Program recommends, along with Melville’s “Billy Budd,” “Starship Troopers,” the 1959 science-fiction novel about a war between mankind and an arachnoid species known as the Bugs.

At the end is a nearly inexplicable comment by Harold Bloom:
“It’s a very mixed bag,” Bloom said. “The two surprising entries, really quite wonderful, are E. M. Forster’s ‘A Passage to India’ and ‘The Red Badge of Courage,’ which is a considerable work of realization.” He talked about a lecture he once gave at West Point, on Walt Whitman’s “Drum-Taps,” and found that the soldiers were “immensely open to what Whitman was doing.”
What did he think about the inclusion of “Starship Troopers”?
“I can’t take that seriously, I’m sorry,” he said. “I suppose it’s on the list because that’s the world we’re headed towards.”

One gets the idea he's never read it.

It's still very fashionable to be totally ignorant of science fiction.

I look forward to a series of postings here, berating Harold Bloom for being an insufficiently well-rounded reader.

I've always striven to be a round-heeled reader.
