I'm only just now hearing of this.

At $105, I most likely won't be getting a copy.

$105! Is it printed on gold leaf or something?

Has anyone heard of any of the authors of the essays therein? Is this one of those vanity press deals?

I've heard of Rafeeq McGiveron (the name is somewhat memorable . . . ).

And $105 isn't way out of line for an academic book.

Gary Westfahl is an established critic and historian of SF who's written many books and edited more. These days he regularly reviews SF films for Locus. I particularly liked his books The Spacesuit Film: A History, 1918-1969 and Hugo Gernsback & the Century of Science Fiction. His best-known book might be Science Fiction Quotations.

John J. Pierce is an editor and critic who, like a surprising number of people, briefly edited Galaxy in its waning years. He's the son of legendary Bell Labs engineer and author John R. Pierce, whose SF pseudonym was J. J. Coupling.

The presence of these familiar scholars persuades me that the book at hand is legit.

Wonder whether any of that $105 goes to David Dyer-Bennet? Once again, we see one of his 1976 Midamericon shots of Heinlein on the cover of this book. He generously made them available with a Creative Commons license, so my guess is that the publisher isn't paying David anything...

I know, having bought a considerable number of them. I just wish it weren't priced for the academic market. Sigh.

I found it used for $39 and bought it still in mint/very fine shape. I'd be lying if I said anything about the contents yet, though.

I checked with David. The publisher both asked him for permission and sent him copies of the book.

Seeing so many unattributed copies of David's pictures on the Web has turned me cynical. I apologize to the fine upstanding people at Salem Press.

One could always buy it on eBay. For $170.76:

Free shipping from the UK. ;)

amazon.com has it for $95.00.

JusTin, I'll have to watch for a used copy. Thanks for the tip.

I find it interesting that the eBook is the same price. Even tech manuals are less in e-format
