So if it weren't for the numerous extensions to copyright law since its publication, Starship Troopers would enter the public domain today.

I'd forgotten that A Canticle for Liebowitz was also copyrighted 1959.

We have Mickey Mouse to thank for that, of course. Not to mention thousands of orphaned works that languish under copyright even though the copyright holders are dead or cannot be found. Ironically, Mickey Mouse's precursor, Steamboat Willie, was itself derivative of a Buster Keaton movie, Steamboat Bill. If Disney's draconian copyright extensions had been in effect in 1928, Steamboat Willie would never have seen the light of day.
