The clear area at the base is what happens with redwood litter -- it's highly acidic, so nothing but another redwood can grow there; a major tree dies off and a ring of smaller trees grows around the area it used to stand. This is a young redwood -- I think it's the Aptos blue variety, but you can't really tell from the photo |
