Robert Heinlein's "For Us, The Living" nominated for the 2004 Prometheus Award for Best Novel The nomination of "For Us, The Living" for the Prometheus Award is further evidence of the timeless relevance of the works of Robert A. Heinlein. David M. Silver President, Heinlein Society October 15, 2004— LIBERTARIAN FUTURIST SOCIETY
[addressed to awards coordinator, Simon & Schuster]
Good news: Robert Heinlein's "For Us the Living" has been nominated for the 2004 Prometheus Award for Best Novel.
Please pass on the good news to the author's estate and his editors. While we understand that this novel was written in the 1930s, its first publication this year makes it eligible under the Prometheus Award's eligibility guidelines for our annual Best Novel award.
I believe that this is the first time that Scribner has published a novel that has been nominated for this award, so congratulations. However, Heinlein is well known to us, having won our Prometheus Hall of Fame award more times than any other author, and having been aware of the Libertarian Futurist Society and giving his blessings to us in the early 1980s, before his death. Also, Virginia Heinlein continued on our mailing list for many years until her death.
So far, only four 2004 novels have been nominated for our Best Novel award, which will be presented at the 2005 Worldcon, so this is a select honor. Our 10-person judging committee, which is just getting started after some new judges were approved by the Libertarian Futurist Society's board of directors, narrows down the nominees each year to five finalists, which will be announced in March.

The Prometheus Award for Best Novel focuses on novels whose plots, themes, characters and/or specific issues reflect the value of personal freedom and human rights, or which seriously or satirically critique abuses of power-- especially unchecked government power.
The Prometheus Award has been presented since 1979, making it one of the most enduring awards after the Nebula and Hugo awards, and one of the oldest fan-based awards currently in sf and fantasy. A full list of past winners in all Prometheus categories is posted on our website, www.lfs.org
Thanks for your help with the Prometheus Awards judging process. If you have any questions, please email or call me. [deleted contact information]. Sincerely,
