HEINLEIN SOCIETY JOINTLY SPONSORS THE HEINLEIN AWARD July 31, 2002. With the approval of Mrs. Robert A. Heinlein, the Heinlein Award for outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space is established. The English Department of the U.S. Naval Academy, Robert A. Heinlein's alma mater, has graciously consented to serve as the official home port for this award. The current chair of the Department is Professor Anne-Marie Drew. |
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE HEINLEIN SOCIETY August 14, 2002. The first annual general meeting of The Heinlein Society, organized as a non-profit corporation and charity, will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at 4 pm, PDT, in CCD, at The 60th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) McEnery Convention Center, San José, California. Under authority of the By-laws adopted by the board in the July business meeting, annual general and other reports will be made, two members of the board of directors will be elected to fill expiring three-year terms, and other appropriate business will be conducted. Current dues-paid regular membership is required by the By-laws for office and eligibility to vote; but all interested may attend the meeting. FOR

The
Advisory Board for this award currently consists of the following members
of the Science Fiction Writers of America: Greg Bear, Joe Haldeman, Yoji
Kondo (Chair), Elizabeth Moon, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Spider Robinson,
Stanley Schmidt, and Charles Sheffield. Herb Gilliland and John Hill,
both professors of English at the U.S. Naval Academy, will also serve on
the Board. The Board will establish and publicize as it determines to be
appropriate its own criteria and select winners of The Heinlein Award autonomously.The
award will be made periodically (but not more often than annually), and
will consist of a certificate and a trophy; future Awards will be presented
to the winner at an appropriate science fiction gathering, such as a WorldCon.
This award is supported by the Sophron Foundation, the Baltimore Science
Fiction Society, and The Heinlein Society. Sophron Foundation is the
sponsor of the Arlington-based Space Transportation Association. The Heinlein Society is a charity established to "Pay It Forward" in Robert Heinlein's name. Mrs. Heinlein and Dr. Kondo serve on the board of directors of The Heinlein Society. Mr. Bear, Ms. Moon, and Capt. Gilliland, and perhaps others of the Advisory Board, will attend the Heinlein Memorial Dinner on Friday evening, August 30, 2002, at ConJosé. SECOND ANNUAL HEINLEIN MEMORIAL DINNER August 14, 2002. The second annual Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Dinner conducted by The Heinlein Society will be held on the evening of Friday, August 30, 2002, at the Eulipia Restaurant in San José, California, in conjunction with festivities at the World Science Fiction Convention, 2002 -- ConJosé. The Eulipia is located within two blocks of the convention center. The
Society has invited a number of friends of Robert and Virginia Heinlein,
including authors and others, to attend as the Society's guests. A limited
number of reserved seats remain available for anyone who wishes to attend.
Membership in the Society is not a requirement. Any friend or appreciative
reader of Robert Heinlein is welcome. We expect to seat no more than sixty
persons. The price for a fine dinner, which is not a fundraiser for the
